Hi! My name is Thamirys Cavaton, and I’m a first-year PhD student in Oceanography at the Colorado School of Mines. Before joining Mines Oceanography, I earned both my bachelor’s degree in Oceanography and my master’s degree in Science from the University of São Paulo, Brazil.

My research focuses on air-sea interactions, with an emphasis on understanding the co-oscillation between wind and sea surface temperature on timescales of days in the global oceans. I aim to identify and quantify the physical processes driving this variability, including surface heat fluxes, wind-driven mixing, Ekman pumping, and other air-sea interaction mechanisms. I am also interested in how these processes vary across different seasons and geographic regions.

Outside of research and classes, I enjoy staying active and spending time outdoors. Since moving to Colorado, I’ve embraced the local lifestyle by hiking both short and long trails, running, and exploring the state’s landscapes.
