PhD Student

Colorado School of Mines

Hey there! My name is Colin Beyers, and I’m a second year PhD student at Colorado School of Mines. Before joining Mines Oceanography in Colorado, I graduated from the College of New Jersey with bachelors degrees in physics and music. I’m new to the world of oceanography, but excited to apply my knowledge of physics and modeling in new ways.

My first chapter will dive into the importance of the Stokes Drift in the California Current System region. The Stokes Drift is a quirky characteristic of linear fluid gravity waves which states that traveling waves cause particles within the them to travel too. I aim to address how the Stokes drift affects particle advection when considering scenarios of higher and lower spatial variability in the Stokes drift field. This is crucial in understanding where particles in the real ocean, such as pollutants, biomass, and flotsam, will end up.

Beyond the lab, I’m a member of the Mines Symphony Orchestra, where I continue perusing my love for music and the French Horn. Additionally, I’ve also begun to embrace the Colorado lifestyle with activities like skiing and bouldering. During my time off, I’m an avid traveler and enjoy backpacking and surfing abroad.
